Second set above was max set and it a new high, potentially with an asterisk...I stopped twice in up plank position to catch breath....not sure if that negates the single effort or not, looking for input from my faithful readers.
I searched the web for quasi-official push-up rules but didn't find anything about plank-resting. Instead, all the rules I did find talk about what constitutes a valid repetition and don't talk about what's legal in between reps.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what to think about plank-resting, but my gut instinct is to allow it. Though, I should do some experimentation to see if it can be abused and then base my opinion on my findings.
Another idea is to time your max sets. E.g., 91 reps in 3 minutes is better than 91 reps in 4 minutes.
By the way, 91 reps in any amount of time is awesome. Good job!
Thank you CMB and please do try some experimentation to see if it can be abused, if it can then it must be a disqualifying action. As applied during above mentioned max set, it was only used at the point where arms and lungs didn't feel they could go any further, or rather when the operator of each didn't wish to try to make them go any further at that moment. I have not try to strategically time breaks in the plank position, though it seems quite possible that doing so would assist total volume in a set? Trying that sounds painful right now though, so will have to wait to see if and when I may be up for it. Again, please do share results of your experimentation as I am eager to hear.
DeleteExperimentation is on hold for a few weeks while I wait for my ribs to heal from a longboard mishap last Friday.
DeleteTruly sorry to hear that, though not because it is a problem to wait on the experimentation as it is not. I sincerely hope your rib injury heals more quickly than one I endured a few years ago (5?)...as I recall it took a few months to heal. What all does your rib issue prevent you from doing?
DeleteRight now, just about everything. Even the act of scrubbing dishes aggravates it.
DeleteI've had a broken rib eleven years ago—my last significant injury while still a resident of Texas—and I'm pretty sure my current injury is not a break, but it's more painful because it's a double bruise to the front and back of the ribcage.
Hmmm...this is what I was afraid of. Sorry to hear that and hope that it heals quicker than you might think, though as stated, my experience with injured ribs was that it took much longer than I expected to heal. Hang in there and let Laura do the dishes, or Nutmeg, anyone but you...frequent guest at Holiday Inn Expresses orders.
