Day 87

  • 3 miles (estimate)
    • Slow
    • 1200
    • From/To Home
  • Just a streak extender, didn't feel bad or good, just under motivated...long run tomorrow to start the new year.

Friday, December 30, 2011

Day 86

  • 1.7 miles
    • Slow
    • 0800
    • From/To Home
  • Gave myself a break due to my lazy/late start and self promise to begin marathon training next week.

Day 85

  • 5.25 miles
    • Medium
    • 1900
    • From/To Home
  • Felt pretty good, decided to extend to 5 miles, not bad for back to back days, though nothing like what I'll need to do if I get back into marathon training...which I plan to start in January.   Good enough reason to go to Waffle House afterwards.

Thursday, December 29, 2011

Day 84

  • 5 miles
    • Medium speed (8:30/mile estimated)
    • 1845
    • From/To home
  • Nice/cool weather out, felt fine, but didn't end up pushing it...right butt bone on outside felt less than perfect, perhaps needs to be stretched more?  Have increased stretching calves and quads on Sister-in-laws suggestion, probably need to do IT band stuff, but maybe that'll be something I start in 2012.

Day 83

  • 2 miles
    • Slow
    • 1945
    • From/To Home
  • Felt very good, should've gone longer probably, but didn't want to I guess...the newer (black) shoes feel much better than the one's I traveled with and threw away in Mobile.

Monday, December 26, 2011

Day 82

  • 3.2 miles (estimate, same as yesterday, though I listed 3.3 yesterday)
    • 8 min/mile pace (25:21)
    • 1100
    • From/To Gran and Gramps house (just past 1.5 mile curve)
  • Ran a little harder today, negative split well...82 makes me think of Herschel Walker, though he may have actually won the Heisman in '83.

Sunday, December 25, 2011

Day 81

  • 3.3 miles (estimate)
    • 8:30/mile-ish
    • 1200
    • From/To Gran and Gramps house
  • Felt a little sore from yesterday's long run, Bec said it's the first time she's run after a long run in a long long time.   Negative split it by 50 seconds or so, after warming up it didn't feel bad.  Hamstring still a little tight, but seems to be getting a little better/looser?

Saturday, December 24, 2011

Day 80

  • 15 miles
    • 8:50/mile pace
    • 0700
    • Mobile, AL -- Spring Hill, Mobile CC, USA, mutant duck park
  • Long Run with Becca, felt OK, ate powerbar gels and carried Gatorade...hammies still felt a little tight, but not bad...still worried about eye swelling and itchy top of mouth, drives me insane.

Friday, December 23, 2011

Day 79

  • 1.5 miles (estimate)
    • Super slow
    • 0650
    • From/To Gran and Gramps house
  • When not feeling well, or not wanting to run even 1 mile can be miserable.   Legs were a bit tight still, so didn't run fast at all, didn't run far either -- woke up with puffy right eye and general fatigue...feel like crap actually, but could have something to do with Cindy's dog Abby...or I could have Shingles like Becca thought she saw on the back of my neck the other day.  Whatever, Streak continues...

Thursday, December 22, 2011

Day 78

  • 2.2 miles
    • Slow
    • 0650
    • From/To Mom and Dad's house
  • Streak extender, legs (hammies especially) felt tighter than comfortable -- not sure why, hope it doesn't last.

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Day 77

  • 4.18 miles
    • 8 mins/mi pace (estimated)
    • 0900
    • From/To Mom and Dad's house
  • Hilly, perhaps 8:15/mi pace, but having measured the last mile at sub 8/mi pace I gave benefit of doubt above.   Ran with Becca, which was nice, but hard, think I'm just tired from the late night running the past two nights...nearing goal of 78 days as that is confirmed to be 2.5 months (Becca's decree that it had to go that long)...next goal 100 days, at which point I send email to David Ross.

Tuesday, December 20, 2011

Day 76

  • 2.05 miles
    • 8:30/mile pace
    • 2130
    • From/To Mom and Dad's house
  • Streak continuer, rainy, after Mellow mushroom with AU crew -- find it harder to do in Atlanta than in PHX, but I guess that makes some sense.

Monday, December 19, 2011

Day 75

  • 4.18 miles
    • 7:43/mile pace
    • 2210
    • From/To my parents house (hilly)
  • Ran hard, probably because Bec and I had serious talk about future, my work being too much of a priority in her opinion and my frustration with her being a bitch about it most of the time....clearly we both need to come towards each other in respect to each -- we will try.   Felt like I ran fast, though pace doesn't show it...guess I should be happy it was sub 8/mi.

Sunday, December 18, 2011

Day 74

  • 2.6 miles
    • 8:33/mile pace
    • 1035
    • From/To my parents house
  • Felt OK considering that yesterday I was so tired I did a fat kid fall towards the end of the run...just a streak extender, thankfully cut knee did not hurt at all and feet felt fine -- starting to think that non-extreme running every day may be easier on the joints than going hard and taking days off, or perhaps I'm just finally getting in better shape?   Don't feel or look like it, but maybe...

Saturday, December 17, 2011

Day 73

  • 14.03 miles
    • Slow
    • 0600
    • From/To Mom and Dad's house
  • 5 miles longer than my previous high for the year, probably not very smart -- took a digger with 2 miles to go, cut my knee, bled down leg and splattered over to other leg...just not in shape for a 14 miler, but that's what was on Becca's marathon schedule and she didn't want to do it alone.   It was fun, but probably not so smart for me.

Friday, December 16, 2011

Day 72

  • 4.03 miles
    • 8:37/mile pace
    • 1130
    • From/to my parents house -- flat route
  • Ran with Becca for the first time in a while, we decided my folks should move to a flatter neighborhood, even though we went the flat route.

Day 71

  • 3.1 miles
    • 8:14/mile pace
    • 0730
    • From/To home:
  • Supposed to run further, just piddled around and ran out of time.

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

Day 70

  • 1.8 miles
    • Slow
    • 0750
    • From/To home
  • Case's birthday, he got a Kindle Fire today, Becca showed him how to use it before I went to run, it was cool to see him excited.  Love that boy...tend to pay more attention to him than Finn these days, but I'm sure that'll change...did enjoy the short amount of time alone with Finn last night after Case went to sleep.

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Day 69

  • 5.09 miles
    • 7:44/mile pace
    • 0545
    • Arrowhead CC treadmill
  • Felt hard, but not brutal, easier to average fastish pace on treadmill -- burned 670 calories and climbed 140+ feet, whatever, I used the treadmill because it was raining pretty hard...as soon as I got home Becca went running in the rain just to make me feel like a wuss.

Monday, December 12, 2011

Day 68

  • 1.7 miles
    • Slow
    • 0745
    • From/To Home
  • Just an easy streak extender -- a little rain, but not cold.

Sunday, December 11, 2011

Day 67

  • 7 miles
    • 7:55/mile pace
    • 1400
    • From/To Home
  • Ran 30 minutes out easy and then negative split the return...return was 7:14/mile, with final mile being 7:00.  Somewhat surprised by the speed overall, especially the return.   Hopefully I can turn a corner soon.

Saturday, December 10, 2011

Day 66

  • 3.6 miles
    • Easy, negative split
    • 1500
    • From/To Home
  • Not too inspired today, promised myself I'd run long tomorrow...

Day 65

  • 1.7 Miles
    • Slow
    • 0645
    • From/To home
  • Lazy streak extender...

Day 64

  • 4.5 Miles
    • Slowish -- check Cool Running
    • 1945
    • From/To home
  • Couldn't get out of the hotel bed in Holiday Inn near JFK -- not because the bed was overly comfortable, just because I was beat...the walk home the night before in horrid rain didn't help.   Bec had both boys down for the night by the time I got home so we alternated runs, which was cool.  The Streak goes on.

Day 63

  • 3 miles (ish?  check GMAPS -- 28 mins)
    • Slow
    • 0630
    • Edison, NJ (From/To Aurigema's house)
  • Nothing impressive, slight rain, not cold though, which was nice.

Tuesday, December 6, 2011

Day 62

  • 5 miles
    • Fastish (8:05/mil -- 7:02 final mile)
    • 0520
    • From/To home
  • Felt OK today, definitely less little aches etc. than I had a month ago...still not able to make the wheels move, get motivated and sustain the speed, but the final mile gave me some hope.   Becca on the other hand rolled out a 41 minute 5 mile effort easily -- her speed has come back very quickly.  Guess today means I made 2 months, which is good, except still haven't reached the Bec minimum of 2.5 months and my next horizon goal of 100, just so I can send an email to David Ross and City.

Monday, December 5, 2011

Day 61

  • 3.1 miles
    • Medium speed (still slow, but ran harder)
    • 0800
    • From/To Home
  • Rain and strong wind made the run more difficult, but I felt fine, glad to not be sick as I feared I was getting.

Day 60

Sunday December 5, 2011
  • 2 miles
    • Slow
    • 1915
    • From/To Home
  • Hurt from yesterday's long run all day, was worried about being sick, felt better after run

Saturday, December 3, 2011

Day 59

  • 9.25 miles
    • Slow
    • 1305
    • From/To Home
  • Perfect overcast cool day for a long run -- ran on the canal, could've gone further...longest run since the sinus issues...still think I have lingering effects from that as I have sinus irritation that I never previously had.   Anyway, good day, streak goes on.

Friday, December 2, 2011

Day 58

  • 3.1 miles
    • Not fast
    • 0700
    • From/To home
  • Nearing 2 months...interesting.   Felt fine, ipod helped, still hate dogs...especially the fact that they crap where I want to run.

Thursday, December 1, 2011

Day 57

  • 5 miles
    • Slow, very
    • 0700
    • From/To Home
  • Passenger 57...still can't make myself get up and go, need to work on that -- always bet on black (the shoes are still an issue, but putting miles on them so I can get rid of them sooner).   Today is Baker's birthday...he is getting serious about getting in shape, got a personal trainer and everything (2 days per week), plans to start cardio now and mentioned he wants to work out every day of his 39th year....which means I must.   Need to remember this.

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Day 56

  • 2 miles
    • Slow
    • 0800
    • From/To Home
  • The Streak leaves no margin for rumbly tummies, wasn't bad, but wasn't exciting either.   Another one in the books...roughly 20 days until I reach Becca's mandate ("this better last at least 2 and a half months or something").

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

Day 55

  • 5 miles
    • Fastish (8:10/mile maybe)
    • 2000
    • From/To home
  • Felt good, wore iShuffle, which always helps.  Tiny sinus concerns, hopefully just for today.

Monday, November 28, 2011

Day 54

  • 3.67 miles
    • Slow
    • 0745
    • From/To Home
  • Felt OK, not fast, not short, not long...just a streak extender I suppose.

Sunday, November 27, 2011

Day 53

  • 3.67 miles
    • 8:10/mile pace
    • 1715
    • From/To Mom and Dad's house (flat route past Beth Jacob synagog)
  • Felt pretty good, probably because I rested all day and ran later in the day -- sped up on the return, felt good about it....thought about Missoula Marathon....

Saturday, November 26, 2011

Day 52

  • 3.5 miles
    • Slow (9+)
    • 0630
    • From Mom and Dad's house to Clifton and Briarcliff
  • Hilly.   IRON BOWL DAY

Friday, November 25, 2011

Day 51

  • 2 miles
    • Slow
    • 1327
    • From/To Home
  • After Chick-fil-A, before trip to Iron Bowl

Thursday, November 24, 2011

Day 50

  • 6.8 miles
    • 8:50/mile  (1 hour)
    • 0600
    • From/To Home
  • 50th Day on Thanksgiving, pretty cool...I'm Thankful for everything, cliche, but whatever.  Having issues  being able to finish runs without having G.I. concerns, hoping that passes soon.

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

Day 49

  • 2 miles
    • Slow
    • 0730
    • From/To Home
  • 7 weeks, not bad, but 50 days sounds better...we'll see if I get there.  Short runs are definitely now easier, but of course never easy.

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Day 48

  • 4.2 miles
    • Slow
    • 0515
    • From/To Home
  • Feeling better still -- took it easy and had to cut a little short due to running late for golf with Lickert.   Forgot to put Case's diaper on last night, which had expected results...

Monday, November 21, 2011

Day 47

  • 2 miles
    • Slow
    • 0700
    • From/To home
  • Nothing special, definitely feeling better running...thinking a lot about the Missoula marathon.

Sunday, November 20, 2011

Day 46

  • 5.3 miles
    • Slow
    • 1915
    • From/To Home
  • Sinuses felt bad when I woke up, didn't bother me during run, hopefully getting over it -- City said she got the go ahead to do Missoula Marathon, time to train up.

Day 45

Saturday November 19, 2011

  • 2 miles
    • Slow
    • 1700
    • From/To Home
  • Pushed Case in the Burley, had a good time, didn't run hard, sinus issues seem to be returning.

Friday, November 18, 2011

Day 44

  • 1.7 miles
    • Slow
    • 0800
    • From/To Home
  • Pushed Case in the Burley, he took a bungee cord with him so he could hook cars and so forth as we went by, he came close, but the best thing he could truly hook was a bush that I let him snag...I think he had fun, I did.  Getting up and going after a 1pm bedtime makes The Streak respectable.

Thursday, November 17, 2011

Day 43

  • 5+ miles (45 mins)
    • Slow
    • 0630
    • Miami Beach, FLA
  • South Beach is seriously insane....never seen such scantily clad women in my life that all seemed to actually be attractive, head spinning.

Day 42

Wednesday November 16, 2011

  • 1.7 miles
    • Slowish
    • 0341
    • From/To home
  • Early start due to 6:30am flight to Miami for SFL terminal opening -- started run at exact time of day Case was born :).    The Streak goes on....

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

Day 41

  • 5 miles
    • Slow
    • 0630
    • From/To home
  • Saw super skinning fast runner girl again today, she was running the opposite direction from what I have seen her running before, must live close to our house, would like to meet her and set her up with Becca so they would be able to run together...seems unlikely that it will ever happen, is nice to see a familiar face out when running though.   Felt good today, not at all fast, but did come to the conclusion that health and 40 days of consequitive running result in me finally being able to halfway enjoy running, or at least tolerate it much better.

Monday, November 14, 2011

Day 40

  • 1.8 miles
    • Slow
    • 0810
    • From/To Home
  • Man, Noah spent some serious time on his Arc.   Wondering what I should give up for lent this year...hmmm....

Day 39

November 13, 2011
  • 2 miles
    • Slow
    • From/To Home
  • Felt fine

Day 38

November 12, 2011
  • 5 miles
    • Slow
    • From/To Home
  • Feeling better, finally.

Day 37

November 11, 2011
  • 2.5 miles
    • Slow
    • From/To Home
  • Veteran's day

Thursday, November 10, 2011

Day 36

  • 3 miles
    • Slow
    • 0715
    • From/To Home
  • Supposed to go a bit longer today, self directed, but didn't get out of bed and started soon enough so cut it short (still long for me lately).   Not as congested, but head felt like I was on brink of sinus headache the whole run....tried to pick up the pace ever so slightly, but didn't have much success.   Think I'm nearing 100% healthwise, which will be nice.

Wednesday, November 9, 2011

Day 35

  • 1.7 miles
    • Slow
    • 0650
    • From/To Home
  • Wore gloves and Liverpool hat, thought of Seamus.  Definitely feeling better, close to 100%, wanting to start running for real, but scared to relapse...this may be the sickest I've been since 2000.

Tuesday, November 8, 2011

Day 34

  • 3 miles
    • Slow
    • 0630
    • From/To Home
  • Felt much better today, still congested, but had more energy...started thinking about doing real training, probably too soon to think that way, but can't seem to help it.   Still having sinus headache of short duration, makes me not want to run fast.   Longest run in weeks, which is pathetic.   Wishing i'd have named this blog "2k everyday" as that seems catchy, but then, no one sees it but me so I'll just call it that.

Monday, November 7, 2011

Day 33

  • 1.7 miles
    • Slow
    • From/To home
  • Thought of my cousin Kevin as I do on this day each year -- his birthday.   My closest relative in age and truly my favorite cousin to be with when I was growing up...everything he ever did was cool and no one has ever filled the room with happiness like he did, never once dorky, but always 100% happy.   Thinking of his great family today as well.

Day 32

November 6, 2011
  • 1.4 miles
    • Slow
    • From/to home
  • Estimated distance, really hope gmaps-pedometer gets back to functioning properly as I do not like to estimate, though I know it's within .1 because I haven't ventured off loops/routes that I know yet.   Feeling better, not yet good, still pissed -- last day of 5 day Z-Pac that's supposed to make me feel better.

Day 31

November 5, 2011
  • 2 miles
    • Slow
    • From to home
  • Still not feeling well, but getting a little better.   Peg in town, which is very fun.   Guess this is a confirmed month, good for me, really looking forward to not feeling like crap.

Day 30

November 4, 2011
  • 1.5 miles
    • Slow
    • From/to Home
  • Estimated distance, confirmed over 1 mile but can't remember the route so cannot calculate (confirmed means I went past a marker that I know to be 1 mile from home -- roundtrip)   Not feeling good yet.

Day 29

November 3, 2011
  • 1.5 miles
    • Slow
    • From/to Home
  • Estimated distance, confirmed over 1 mile but can't remember the route so cannot calculate (confirmed means I went past a marker that I know to be 1 mile from home -- roundtrip)   Went to Doctor, got Z-pac for sinus infection, look forward to it working.

Day 28

November 2, 2011
  • 1.7 miles
    • Slow
    • From to Home
  • Still feel like crap, thinking seriously about going to the doctor.

Day 27

November 1, 2011
  • 1.2 miles
    • Slow
    • From to home
  • Didn't feel good, big surprise, sinus thing seriously pissing me off -- sickest I think I've ever been for a prolonged period of time.   Thought this run was about 1.5, thought wrong.  Shortest run to date.

Day 26

October 31, 2011
  • 4 miles
    • Slow
    • From to home
  • Pushed Case around neighborhoods to seek Halloween decorations, had a lot of fun

Day 25

October 30, 2011
  • 1.7 miles
    • Slow
    • From to home

Day 24

October 29, 2011
  • 1.4 miles
    • Slow
    • From to home
  • Estimated distance -- gmaps-pedometer not working?   Still felt like crap.

Day 23

October 28, 2011
  • 2 miles
    • 8:30/mile pace
    • ACC -- Treadmill
  • Sinus issue persistent, running short until it's better.

Thursday, October 27, 2011

Day 22

  • 1.7 miles
    • Slow
    • 6am
    • From/To Home
  • First time I really considered discountining "The Streak"-- just feel like crap.   My Father was complaining of a sore throat and now I seem to have the same, head is still messed up as all I want to do is sleep, plus I've hocked up a half gallon of snot varying in color.   Knew the run wouldn't be that bad and it wasn't about not being able to complete it, but rather the thought that it really could be "The Streak" that is preventing me from getting over these various undesirable feelings of ill health.   Anyway, "The Streak" goes on....

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

Day 21

  • 1.6 miles
    • Slow
    • 8:30pm
    • From/To Home
  • Very close to not doing this one -- absurd cold symptoms back, just feel like crap when I get home.   Seriously considering going to the doctor to have them draw blood.   Bec thinks maybe it's an ulcer?  Anyway, cool evening, easy run, knees feel tired...have though that perhaps "The Streak" is causing the health issues, at this point plan to run through it.   As always, we shall see...

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Day 20

  • 3 miles
    • Slow
    • 8:30am
    • From/To home
  • Felt a little better today, still feel sinus issues...debating going to the freakin doctor.  Taking today off from work as my folks are in town -- in even more exciting news, today is the relaunch of The McRib, Case and I will be going there for lunch.

Monday, October 24, 2011

Day 19

  • 1.7 miles
    • Slow
    • 7:15am
    • From/To Home
  • Pushed Case in the Burley bike trailer.   Huge difference from the Maclaren, negligible difference from running with no stroller, which is nice.   Still have this stupid sinus thing, Motrine seems to help it, but I can't take that every day, want to wake up feeling good to see how that will affect my running.   Today was not difficult though, nothing hurt except my sinuses.   (Did feed Finn from 0130-0310...have to see how that affects me rest of the week)

Sunday, October 23, 2011

Day 18

  • 6.2 miles
    • Slow
    • 5:55am
    • From/To Home
  • The cold/sinus thing in still lingering -- giant and discusting snot coming out with every blow -- but not real bad, just makes me feel sluggish.   Went especially slow so this wasn't hard, but I still find myself looking forward to considering any run "easy."   18 is not my favorite number...three 6's is just not something I like, so here's hoping I survive until tomorrow to get past it.

Saturday, October 22, 2011

Day 17

  • 5 miles
    • 9 min/mi pace
    • 6:25am
    • From/To home
  • Woke up a bit dehydrated resulting in this run being far more difficult than any slow 5 mile run should be...wasn't bad, but it wasn't as easy as it should have been.  Thought of 17 as I ran, Kip Winger played in my head and then I also recalled that the first girl I ever really "dated" was #17 on the SPX soccer team.  Anyway, "The Streak" goes on....

Friday, October 21, 2011

Day 16

  • 1.7 miles
    • Slow
    • 6:30am
    • From/To Home (around the block)
  • Case was awake so I decided to take him with me, in the Maclaren stroller.   Maclaren strollers are not built for running, this was much more difficult than intened, but Case seemed to enjoy it.  "The Streak" goes on...

Thursday, October 20, 2011

Day 15

  • 3.2 miles
    • 8:45/mi pace
    • 5:45am
    • From/To Home (Over walking bridge over 101 and back)
  • Continue to feel better each day with regard to the sinus/cold deal, but stomach a little jacked today -- probably from eating to much at Black Bear diner last night with Jenyang and his girlfriend and Case.   Didn't feel as sluggish this morning and knee didn't bother me once I got going...though it was concerning when I woke up (seems I hurt it when playing with Case regularly).   Anyway, nothing special about this run, just stressed about work for half an hour then I was done running and could stress while making breakfast etc.  "The Streak" goes on...

Day 14

  • 5 miles
    • 8:50/mi pace
    • 5:25am
    • From/To Home
  • Well, the shoes I ordered did come in and right on the day they were supposed too...but they're ALL BLACK.  Yeah.  Probably the ONLY color scheme I won't tolerate, except that, yeah, I opened them and ran in them this morning.  I honestly do hate the look of them, but I needed new shoes and almost immediately I was happy I hadn't sent them back to await the white/blue/gray color combo I had ordered because my knees felt significantly better with every foot strike (more runner dork speak, not doing well with this, could be a problem).   Anyway, nothing special about the run, again promised myself not to pick up the pace until Thanksgiving...not sure why really because I imagine I can pick up the pace now and not injury myself, but I'm going with that thought for now -- perhaps it is a patience test I'm giving myself.   I am getting over the cold or sinus infection or whatever, so hopefully I'll feel 100% soon, though the night with Mr. Finn (Becca says maybe it's a growth spurt?) may delay me feeling fully recovered a bit as I was up at 2am and again at 4, without any real belief that I fell asleep between them.   Anyway, "The Streak" goes on!  2 weeks, a milestone I guess.

Day 13

  • 3.1 miles
    • Slow
    • 5:50am
    • From/To Home (roundtrip to walking bridge over 101)
  • Feeling better today though still a bit congested -- when hearing that my teeth hurt yesterday a friend diagnosed that I may have a sinus infection, since that moment it has seemed as such.  That stated, I did feel much better today and had no difficulty extending "The Streak" today.  (Unassociated but noteworthy, Finn slept in his own room for the first time last night, which may be another reason why I feel better today.   Somewhat associated, I believe my new shoes, ordered on-line, a first for me, should arrive today...man, I think that sentence just confirmed that I'm leaning towards runner dork tendancies....have to keep an eye on that to see how it plays out)

Day 12

  • 1.7 miles
    • Slow
    • 6:45am
    • From/To Home (loop around the block)
  • Just to continue "The Streak."   Have a cold, hate it more with every passing minute.  F, how did I get this cold?!   "The Streak" goes on...

Day 11

Sunday October 16, 2011
  • 3.2 miles
    • 9:07/mile pace
    • 8am
    • From/To Home (over walking bridge crossing 101)
  • Did this with Becca, schedule called for 9 miles, no way I would've even done 1 if it weren't for this streak.  First challege if it can be called that, have full on cold.  I hate colds.

Day 10

Saturday October 15, 2011
  • 5 miles
    • Slow
    • 7am
    • From/To Home
  • Went well considering that I was very tired and congested, feeling like a cold coming on.   I hate colds.  Hate.

Day 9

  • 1.7 miles
    • Slow
    • 6am
    • From/To Home
  • Felt fine, warmed up with exercises listed below.
  • 100 sit-ups, 25 pull-ups

Thursday, October 13, 2011

Day 8

  • 3.5 miles
    • Slow
    • 6am
    • From/To Home
  • Right knee still feels brittle when starting out, but OK thereafter.  Ran with Becca and discussed the fact that this could be our last run together for years...(last night felt fatigue in my legs same as night before...this every day stuff is already taking a toll, which is pathetic -- guess I'll have to hope to play my way into shape..).

Day 7

  • 5 miles
    • 8:59/mile pace
    • 6am
    • From/To Home
  • Felt pretty tired last night, legs exhausted to the point of reminding me of Ironman Training...this is not very encouraging since I barely eclipsed 20 miles over the past 7 days, but whatever, hopefully I'll start feeling better.   The slight chaffing (underwear too small?  Man, I am fat) noticed only yesterday was not noticed today.   Right knee felt a little old until maybe half a mile...sped up as I went, finishing final mile in around 8 minute pace, marking the first sub 9 pace I've felt like doing (not counting treadmill runs) since beginning "The Streak."
  • 100 Push-ups (20 of which were with Case on my back), 125 sit-ups

Tuesday, October 11, 2011

Day 6

  • 3.1 miles
    • Slow place (9+mins/mi)
    • 6:45am
    • From/to Home
  • Body felt a bit better today, though I felt wrecked last night...ran with Becca today for the first time in forever, very cool, Gran watched the boys during our short run.  (Longest run for Bec since Finn was born 29 days ago)

Monday, October 10, 2011

Day 5

  • 1.7 miles
    • Slow pace
    • 5:40am
    • From/to Home
  • Felt a bit creaky, knees felt a little stiff and old, considered only doing 1 mile, pressed on.  Officially decided to blog about "The Streak."
  • 120 push-ups, 150 sit-ups:   Not yet pushing any efforts to exaustion/failure, wondering when I might start.

Day 4

OCTOBER 9, 2011
  • 8 miles
    • 9 min/mi pace (roughly, not yet wearing Garmin or any watch)
    • From/to Home
  • First run in a year with headphones/i-shuffle, concentrated on keeping pace slow as I feared I wouldn't be able to finish -- had resigned myself to run/walk if necessary, but didn't need to.   Afternoon had slightly upset stomach, which I call the long run feeling, but still don't know if it may just be that I regularly drink too much chocolate milk after long runs, as I did this time as well.   No I don't plan to stop the practice.

Day 3

OCTOBER 8, 2011
  • 5 Miles
    • 9+mins/mile pace
    • From/to home
  • Felt Fine, went very slow, though training program said "Pace," I just wasn't up for it this early in the plan.  Hip ached in mid-afternoon, as if I had run 10+ miles...concerned about next days 8 miler planned.

Day 2

OCTOBER 7, 2011
  • 1.7 miles
    • 9+mins/mile pace
    • From/to home
  • Felt Fine
  • 20 pull-ups

Day 1

As stated in the first posting, which I consider the Intro-Blog, the streak started 10/6/2011 in Somerset, NJ.   Ran on the treadmill of the Crown Plaza Hotel.
  • 3 Miles
    • 8:20/mile Pace
    • 1.0 degree incline
  • Felt fine
Prior to 10/6 my "Exercise Streak" started on 10/3 with the following:
  1. 10/3   100 push-ups, 125 sit-ups at home
  2. 10/4    2.6 Mile run around neighborhood in Glendale, AZ
  3. 10/5    100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups on hotel floor in Long Island, NY (Holiday Inn Express, JFK, awful hotel)

Starting a running streak -- and a running streak blog

"The Streak" as I will call it even though that may be the least creative name for it possible, started 10/6/2011, my 39th birthday.   That day I ran 3 miles on a treadmill in Somerset, NJ (Crown Plaza, because I couldn't get my friends John or Mark to pick up their phones and therefore couldn't stay at John house as I usually do when in the area).   Actually, I started an "Exercise Streak" 3 days before, so I'll effectively be keeping track of that as well, but for now let me just define "The Streak," type out a few goals and then catch up on the postings so that hopefully this can be easily maintained through the duration of the streak...which, yeah, could end tomorrow...

  • "The Streak" refers to the consecutive number of days I have run at least 1 mile.
    • The 1 mile distance is what "running streaker’s" who formed the United States Running Streak Association (USRSA) Inc. have deemed the minimum required for an official running streak to be recognized by their organization and certified with publication on their website.   I don’t have a desire to be on their website or certified by them officially, but the 1 mile minimum seems to legitimize the effort simply because of the USRSA existence and apparent mastery of the concept.  (Read more on this website if you care to learn more about those freaks:  http://runeveryday.com/)
    • I may make my minimum distance requirement 1.5 miles; a) just because, b) one loop around the block I live on = 1.7 miles (roughtly…gmaps-pedometer.com measures it at 1.7, whereas my Garmin 305 usually has it between 1.65 and 1.67) and c) that seems like a good amount of time to get warmed up properly so that I can then stretch, which I plan to do after every run for cliché reasons.
  • “Exercise Streak” refers to the consecutive number of days I have done some exercising…yes, running counts, however, if the exercising completed is something other than running I have come up with the following minimums, strictly out of my own head:
    • 100 combined reps of push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups.
    • Hiking longer than 45 minutes
    • 20 minutes of continuous distance-covering swimming
Goals:
  • Well, I actually do need to lose a few pounds.  Most people, possibly just being nice, say I don’t appear to, but I think that’s mostly just because I am still quite a small guy.  Fact is, my pants don’t fit…I can still wear them, but they don’t fit and I’m far too cheap to buy new ones, so I had to do something.   I weigh 155 lbs. right now.   (If I redistribute that is fine as well, I weighed 164 in college and my pants fit...yes, some of the same pairs, my wife has many reasons to hate me)
  • Just see how long this streak will last…another week?   (Blog started at day 8 of Exercise Streak and day 5 of Running Streak)
  • Put down my very brief (this may be the most text I write on any single blog as I envision very short statement-style postings each day or each week...we shall see) thoughts as I go.   I want to have a record of starting an exercise lifestyle from close to zero fitness…it has been forever since I worked out with any regularity at all and I’m probably in as bad a shape as I can remember being…well, ever.
  • Build base for a Marathon in 2012…I’ve done 4 of them, but since I’m in rather soft shape they seem like a billion years ago and completed by someone else.  Right now I’m eyeing the Missoula, MT marathon with a friend who is an entirely over the top triathlete guy named Elliot.  (Since I generally do best on a “plan” I printed out Hal Higdon’s Intermediate I plan for running a marathon and will follow that, plus the 1.7 mile jaunts on off days and additional push-ups/sit-ups/pull-ups/whatever-I-feel-like stuff.   Hal will run you into the ground, so using that as a base builder should put me in position to ramp up the speed work thereafter as a few month tune up to Missoula…best laid plans right?)
How I plan to accomplish…well, conceptually it isn’t very hard.  Just run every day and if that streak, excuse me, “The Streak” gets broken then see if I can at least exercise so that I can continue that streak.   Right now Becca and I have settled on the morning feeding of our newborn, Finn, being the starting gun for my various efforts…eventually I’ll have to lay out a more formal plan as the runs/work-outs may take longer to complete, but for now this should allow me to keep “The Streak” going provided that my head stays in it.  I’ll also have to always have gear with me and think ahead a little bit when traveling….not sure how I’ll settle on making sure “The Streak” continues when I travel to Asia for instance because on the clock at least I miss complete days when doing that, but I suppose I could look up Greenwich Mean Time and always go by that, or something.   Again, we’ll see, but if I remain mentally committed to it then there should always be a way and if I don’t, well, then it will end and I’ll post one last entry stating “THE END.”   So, here goes I guess…
