Day 148

  • 5 miles
    • 7:44/mile
    • 0630
    • Miami, FL
  • Treadmill run at Doral Intercontinental hotel, felt good actually, just cruised, but happy that a cruise could be sub 8 minute miles...well, except that I can never know if treadmills are calibrated correctly, but mentally it was good for me.

  1. Regarding treadmills: there's also the issue of elasticity. With each strike of the foot, the treadmill acts as a spring by bending downward an inch or two before springing back up to release its stored energy. How does springiness affect a running stride? Does it increase or decrease the overall burden for the runner?

I guess I'll accept your 5 miles, but in case treadmills make it easier for the runner I don't want to see any 1.1- or 1.2-mile runs logged on treadmills—not for this awesome streak, sir!

  2. "I guess I'll accept" Wow...wow. I'm not at all offended by the notion that my effort may not have been acceptable, I am just very surprised that it never occured to me that treadmill efforts may not be. I agree that it's much more questionable and probably best categorized as an aerobic activity rather than saying that it is actually running, but when considering my streak effort I never thought that maybe treadmill "runs" diminished the purity of the "running streak." They do. Hmmm. I think I'm OK with that, at least for now as I do not know that I could deal with the added difficulty of insisting that I always actually run -- treadmill runs are much easier to squeeze in when working elsewhere int he world than actual running can sometimes be. I do think that if the streak continues for much longer then at some point I would like to start a new streak within the streak of "real running," but for now I'll allow myself to put that decision off for a while.

Above stated, Craig M. B, you have my assurance that I will not log any 1.1 or 1.2 "mile" "runs on treadmills." Now I just need to determine what the minimum requirement is for aerobically exercising on a treadmill and considering it a "run" if only for the purpose of contining the increasingly questionable "streak." Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

  3. Really, I was just joking. Physiologically, it's probably better to mix it up and do some treadmill runs—for those who are psychologically equipped to deal with treadmills.

    1. Believe experience shows that I am well equipt to handle the treadmill runs psychologically as I've done some pretty long mileage on them, but your jokes seem to overwhelm my mental capacity :), though I appreciate them none-the-less.
